Currently we are beginning a reading and discussion series on racism and the construction of white supremacy within the colonial history of this region. Clearly this was imposed on indigenous people, but others bore the weight of deep discrimination in the state-making project.
The first reading will be a chapter from Kay Anderson’s Vancouver’s Chinatown: Racial Discourse in Canada 1875-1980. The chapter “Creating Outsiders” is a helpful historical piece on the construal of difference and its political and material consequences for Chinese people, but it also sheds light on the fierce defense and expansion of white power.
The first discussion will be held on Monday, June 24, 2013 @ 7:00 pm (GCBC, 1803 East 1st Ave, Vancouver, unceded Coast Salish Territory).
